What Is a Retrograde & Why Does It Matter?
In astrology, a retrograde happens when a planet appears to move backward in the sky from our view on Earth. This isn’t because the planet is actually reversing its orbit — it’s an optical illusion caused by the way Earth and the other planet are moving relative to each other.
But in energetic and symbolic terms, retrogrades have real and noticeable effects.
Each planet governs specific areas of life — like communication (Mercury), relationships (Venus), structure (Saturn), or transformation (Pluto). When a planet goes retrograde, the energy it normally expresses outwardly turns inward, calling us to slow down, reflect, or revisit past themes related to that area.
You might not consciously track the planets, but you may feel their effects:
Feeling unusually emotional or foggy
Revisiting old memories, relationships, or choices
Noticing communication breakdowns or delays
Experiencing a deep urge to declutter or reset your path
Feeling “in limbo” or like something is shifting under the surface
Even if you don’t follow astrology closely, you likely notice these energetic shifts — especially during periods when multiple planets are in retrograde at once, like we’re experiencing from July to October 2025.
Rather than seeing this time as a setback, we can view it as an essential recalibration — personally, professionally, and spiritually.
Why Planetary Energy Affects Us
Everything in the universe, including humans, is made up of energy and vibration. Just as the moon affects ocean tides and our body rhythms, other celestial bodies carry energetic influence too. Astrology isn’t about fate — it’s about awareness.
When we understand these cycles, we can work with the energy rather than against it.
Think of retrogrades as nature’s way of giving us a pause button — a time to reflect before charging ahead.
July 2025 Retrograde Snapshot
Here’s what’s happening in the skies — and what it may be asking of us:
Pluto in Aquarius (May–Oct)
Encourages transformation in systems, technology, and power structures. We may see major shifts in government, digital ethics, and collective reform.
Neptune in Aries (July–Oct)
Dissolves false identities and invites a return to spiritual authenticity. We’re being asked to strip away the performance and reconnect with purpose.
Saturn in Aries (July–Sept)
Highlights personal discipline and ambition. This is a time to redefine success and examine what you’re committing to long-term.
Mercury in Leo (July 18–Aug 11)
Slows communication, especially in leadership and creative expression. Old conversations may resurface for closure or clarity.
Collective Impact: What We May See Globally
As this retrograde season unfolds, expect to witness:
Shifts in leadership and institutional accountability
Disruption in communication and media narratives
Resurgence of old trends and re-evaluation of what we celebrate publicly
A collective pull toward spiritual exploration and inner truth
This period may feel uncertain — but uncertainty creates the space for innovation, integrity, and deeper connection to emerge.
How to Work with This Energy
Retrogrades aren't something to fear - they're a powerful opportunity to reconnect with yourself, your path and your purpose. Whether you’re a creative, a business leader, or navigating personal change — here’s some ways to move through this time with more ease and awareness:
Reassess, Don’t Rush Now’s the time to edit, refine, and re-align rather than start something brand new. A good time to reconnect with forgotten ideas. Journal regularly - ask yourself:
What themes are repeating right now?
Is there something I need to revisit or heal?
Am I acting from alignment or habit?
Retrogrades bring back what we haven't fully processed. Writing it out helps bring awareness to the surface.
Nurture Your Nervous System What the world calls “slowing down” is often your intuition speaking up. Be gentle with yourself and others - people are more sensitive during retrogrades. Give extra space, speak clearly and don't take delays or confusion personally. Everything is recalibrating.
Reconnect with Your Inner Compass Your soul already knows the way forward — this season just helps you hear it more clearly. As retrogrades stir up a lot energetically try nature walks, salt baths, sound bowl meditations and other energy hygiene practises...like visual clearing.
Use the New Moon to set inner intentions and the Full Moon to release what no longer serves you. Working with the moon helps anchor your personal rhythm with larger cosmic cycles.
Stay Open to Insight Delays are not denials. They're invitations to move more consciously.
Intuitive art, freewriting, movement or sound can unlock what words can't. This is especially powerful during Neptune and Mercury retrogrades, where logic alone wont reveal the whole picture.
Redefine Your Boundaries or Goals
Avoid big launches, commitments or tech upgrades (especially during Mercury Upgrade) unless your intuitively guided and well prepared.
Final Thoughts
When the planets pause, it’s not to punish — it’s to invite you inward. Not everything that looks like a detour is a mistake. Sometimes it’s how you find the path you were really meant to walk.
And in a world that moves fast, these retrogrades offer something radical:
The chance to slow down, reflect, and choose alignment over autopilot!
